Dear Flo Today's Tips
SUMMER 2006

Dear Flo,
When it gets so hot during those heat waves I really lose my energy and don't feel very good. Do you have any ideas to help me? -Lathargic in Fairhills

Dear Lathargic,

I know just how you feel. I get the same way and my mom always worries about me. My friend Pheobe gave us a website to go to where you can buy scarves with stuff in them that keep you cool. Here's the info: www.petsmart.com and look for their Outward Hound Cool-it-Bandana. also go to www.cooldoggs.com and see variety. Their offerings look a little more like regular bandana's and sell for $9.95. Good luck, and remember the older the dog, the harder it is for them to function in heat. And double check the water bowl, they drink so much more in the heat.

In the summer it's so much fun to eat outside. Here are a few of our favorites:

Fish in Sausalito., Taco Janes in San Anselmo, Panama Hotel in San Rafael. And to feel summery and beachy we love to go to Stinson Beach Grill, or to the Taco Shack in Sausalito, Have fun.

Dear Flo,
My parents say it’s hard to play with me because of all of the rainy weather. They don’t like my muddy paws after the park, and when all of my fur gets wet they say I smell like a wet dog….Hellloooo, I am a wet dog. Now I smell OK, but I’m very bored.
Simon in Rafael Highlands
Dear Simon,
Or should I call you Sigh-man. You really do sound bored. My parents make me stay while they hide treats and toys somewhere in the house. I go from room to room until I find them. It’s fun and it gives them a chance to see how smart I am because I always do find them.

Flo’s notes: I am sad to report that last month I lost one of my best friends to prostate cancer. He was a very nice and handsome Rottwiler/Australian shepherd mix named Duke who loved to play with toys and was even nice to cats. He was one of the very special ones, and lots of us will miss him.

Dear Flo,
Do dogs get allergies? My eyes itch.
-Teary in Sun Valley
Dear Allergy Sufferer,
Oh, I know just how you feel. My problem is that I am allergic to excessive pollens and freshly cut grass, but it feels so good to roll around rubbing my eyes on the short grass that it makes it worse. Ask your Mom or Dad to wipe your eyes with a damp cloth at the end of the day, it will help reduce your discomfort.

Dear Flo,
I like to go on errands with my Mum. Do you know of any good places I should ask her to take me?
-Mummy’s Boy, Racquet Club

Dear Mummy’s Boy,
Are you an English Cocker Spaniel? Or an English Bull Terrier? Or are you guys mummy’s? I just have a Mom. My favorite place to go is to West End Nursery when she stocks up on flowers for the window boxes. She is so happy there and I get to smell so many nice, fresh smells.

A note from Flo:
We are reaching the season when it is too hot to leave your dog in your car- The air temperature in the car heats up to deadly levels within minutes. Not all days are good days to go along on errands with your mom, or your mummy.

Dear Flo,
I heard a rumor that you turned twelve! Oh my gosh, how do you stay looking so young?
-Dorian Gray Dog, Fairhills

Dear Dorian,
I’m so glad you asked! My mother takes me to the Lancome counter at Nordstrom once a year for a make-up analysis, then to Evo spa for a facial. Beyond that I eat just really healthy food: Innova Senior, and I exercise a lot. I run for the frisbee, go on walks with my parents, run at the beach. Oh! I almost forgot - I have lots of toys. I love them all. I have sheep, a floppy horse, Cat in the Hat, a fish, and lots more!

Dear Flo,
What are your favorite dog friendly beaches?
-Tom Curren Dog, Sun Valley

Dear Surfer Dude,
I love the north side of Stinson Beach, Muir Beach, the beach at Carmel, and Butterfly Beach in Santa Barbara. The sticks are great at Navarro Beach in Mendocino, but you absolutely have to be on leash which is a little tough.

A note from Flo:
I would like to point out the importance of dogs in literature. Think about it. Most kids learn to read from stories all about “Spot” ~ “See spot run”, etc..This is probably based on the fact that we are such an imortant part of life and that we teach people so much about love, fun, loyalty, and relaxation.

Dear Flo,
I have been itching like crazy and I can’t figure it out. My parents say “stop that!” but they have no idea how itchey I am. Any ideas? tchy and Scratchy show, Fairhills

Dear Itchy,
I scratched and I itched until my mom took me to the vvv, the vvvvee, the vvvveeeet. I hate it there because it smells funny and they sometimes give me shots. However, the vet did give me some pills that stopped the itch and then told my mom to apply Advantage every three weeks! He said this has been the bigest flea season in years and even though no one knew I had them, one bite can cause an alergic reaction. I don’t want to bum you out, but that will mean a bath every three weeks. Oh, it’s always something.

Dear Flo, I want to go on vacation with my family this summer. Any good ideas? I don’t like my babysitter! - -Home Alone

Dear Home Alone, if you are signing your name in the hopes that your parents will be reading this - and that they have seen the movie, good idea it might just work. I can tell you about the Cypress Inn in Carmel.

They are so pet friendly that they even take cats! Yikes! But they do. It is a very pretty place and pets are encouraged to
join their families for happy hour in the bar. Carmel beach is the best beach with white sand and they are super dog friendly.
The Cypress Inn: 831-624-3871. There are lots of restaurants within walking distance that allow pets on the patio! Have fun.

Dear Flo,
It’s Spring, well duh, you knew that, but anyway - I have itchy eyes, do dogs get allergies? Every one thinks I’m crying because my eyes are watering. I like the sympathy treats, but my friends at the park are starting to think I’m a cry baby. Sneezy in Sun Valley

Dear Cry baby- JUST KIDDING!,
Have your parents wipe your eyes very gently with a soft cloth with warm water at night. That will help remove the pollens and make you comfortable.

A note from my Mom:
I was showing a house for sale and in the garage there was torn insulation and scratch marks on the door and wall next to it. When I asked the owner what happened there she said, “Oh that’s our dumb dog. We leave her in the garage all day while we go to work and she tries to scratch or chew her way out.” Sounds prettly smart to me. I felt so bad for the dog and just wanted to remind everyone that may be thinking about getting a puppy this Spring to make sure you have time for the pup or that you will be able to let the dog stay comfortably in the house or with a doggy door to the fenced back yard if it is in the garage. And don’t forget they love comfy dog beds and lots of fresh water and shade especially as the weather gets warmer!

Dear, Flo

How did you get rid of the wet dog smell?

Thanxs Katie
